Ettal Abbey, Bavaria, Germany -- Johan Baptist Straub was among the first to merge sculpture seamlessly into architectural design -- one of the reasons he has been called "the father of the Bavarian Rococo sculpture." The swirling garlands of his picture frames integrate well with the shell shapes stuccoed in the walls. Note that the feminine saints depicted in oil are accompanied by female statues and vice versa.Three of the six altar paintings are by Martin Knoller; the rest were done by Munich court painters.
