Ettal Abbey, Bavaria, Germany -- Here's a view of the south side of the facade with its statues and another "blind" doorway at about the middle of this picture. As we shall see, the Benedictines left around 1800 but returned a century later. By then, some of the buildings had been torn down and had to be rebuilt to recreate the mid-17th century grandeur of this large courtyard. They probably decided then to complete the south tower -- even though they didn't match its cap.
