After our recent visit to York's great medieval cathedral, we had great plans to explore the inner sanctums of St. Patrick's Cathedral. But fatigue and Hispanic politics conspired against us and kept us on the outside. (Is there a message there, Benedict?) We snapped this picture below Thursday night after seeing the Pajama Game, on our way back to our hotel on the opposite side of the Rockefeller Center from St. Pats.
St. Pats is the largest neo-Gothic cathedral in the US. Construction started in the 1850s after New York was upgraded to an archdiocese. Due to a Civil War suspension, the building took 20 years to finish.
St. Pat's twin spires (added later) rise to 330 feet.
On Sunday morning, I thought I'd sneak into St. Pats for a photo session. However, one million folks decided to hold a Puerto Rican Day parade to foil my intentions. (It takes a lot of people to keep me out of church on Sundays!) The parade was led by such sex idols as Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, and Hillary Clinton. (Not being a paparazzo, I missed that part, but did see NY's other senator, Charles Schumer -- big deal!)
