It ain't Texas, but Paris is the next best thang

August 2000

Sheila and Jim do France (yet again!)

The long awaited state visit of Kalamazoo's first couple (and infamous dog owners -- or is it owners of infamous dogs?) began with Dick and Pietrina meeting Jim and Sheila in Burgundy at a former 3 star Michelin restaurant. Jim and Shiela were ending a three week vacation including a two week cruise from Istanbul to the South of France. Dick and Pietrina used the excuse of meeting them to visit other sites in the area starting a few days earlier.

Here's a couple pictures in front of the hotel the morning of our departure. These people look tired after loading hundreds of Bridenstine suitcases into the rental car:

Paris

After a brief visit to the Romanesque/Gothic church in the town of St. Pierre where we stayed, we were off to a morning in Vezelay followed by an afternoon in Dijon. After the uneventful drive back to Paris, we walked to dinner and saw the midnight twinkle of the Eiffel tower. The next morning, we were off walking through the older parts of the city where we grabbed this shot in the Palais Royale…

On our last night we finally got around to posing for the de riguer pre-dinner shot at the top of the page. At the same time, we happened upon a meeting of the combined daughters of the Paris-American revolution. Madame DeFarge was too old to make the session.

Unfortunately most of the good restaurants in Paris were closed for August. Fortunately, Dick was able to book a table for four at one of his favorites. Unfortunately, he couldn't remember which one it was. After walking to several of them, we gave up and walked up to the movie district.

And finally (hopefully you have abandoned this page long ago), here's a few pictures taken to demonstrate the concept of digital cameras to our technology challenged mid westerners. (all is not lost, though, one of them owns a Palm Pilot -- guess which one!)

Before we knew it, we were repacking their car and sending them off to DeGaulle airport. We hope they will return soon.
